concerning performance: all OpenGL related functionality is implemented in native code at the end of the day. we expose this in the fastest possible way on the Java side. don't worry it will be fast enough for you as well. Most of our work is concerned with optimizations specifically targeted at OpenGL Es 1.x/2.0 on Android. We have that covered for you. Just try to follow the OpenGL best practices.

Did you mean GLES 1.x in libGDX is optimized

it works the same way as gles 2.0. the only difference is that for gles 1.x we use the android bindings and for gles 2.0 e use our own. they have the exact same caling overhead and "performance"
